Dr. Björn Birk is a Consultant in Pain Medicine and Anaesthesia at University Hospitals Sussex. He specialises in managing acute and chronic pain, using advanced interventional and ultrasound-guided techniques with a compassionate, patient-centred approach. His expertise includes back and joint pain, sciatica, neuropathic pain, post-herpetic neuralgia, and peripheral neuropathy.
Dr Birk provides anaesthesia for trauma, orthopaedic, spinal, and ophthalmic surgery. He trained at Nottingham University Medical School and completed postgraduate training in Anaesthesia at various centres in the south east of England followed by a fellowship in advanced Pain Medicine training at St George’s Hospital, London, gaining extensive experience in complex pain and regional anaesthesia.
His clinical and research interests focus on ultrasound-guided procedures and simulation-based training. His work developing ultrasound training phantoms has been presented nationally and internationally and published in peer-reviewed journals.
A dedicated educator, Dr Birk teaches at Brighton and Sussex Medical School and mentors postgraduate doctors. He is a Fellow of both the Royal College of Anaesthetists and the Faculty of Pain Medicine.
Outside medicine, he enjoys flying gliders and powered aircraft, as well as art and photography — pursuits that reflect his precision, creativity, and attention to detail.
